I had the same problem, and found that installing printer drivers wasn't enough.
 I also had to use the Chooser to select it.  You say you've done that and it
still doesn't work -- I don't know what to tell you....

I'm not sure, but I think System 7.0 handles that by itself.

The objective of the Second Sight Echo is for the dissemination of
information of Freesoft Corporation's Second Sight (SS) bulletin board

Norm:

We must be thinking on the same wavelength.  After reading a few RRH Echo
messages, I decided to post the rules.  The messages were definitely
getting off topic.  Hopefully everyone will comply in the future.

Glad to hear about the Second Sight beta.  In New Jersey I still consider
it to be the "top" BBS package for the Mac, although other NJ Mansion fans
may disagree.

Ralph, I don't want to be pre-mature and say something that may not

Yeah, Norm, I thought from watching the Finder "About this Macintosh"
dialog box while programs were executing thaT the heap was dynamic.
Although you can still run out of memory if it takes a while for some
programs to clear out, i.e. still showing 2 to 3 programs with memory
requirements.  But with 4 megs of memory I should be fine.

As for the games still working on contacting the author's on this. Do you
have any idea what they ahould look for to solve this problem. Like I said
earlier, it works fine in local but not via the modem. Any thing in the
SSLaunch file they should be aware of?

Maria,

I too have experienced this bug, but without Appleshare implemented.

I found a work-a-round that won't crash the computer. (Mac Plus)

Try using the Command-P (Modify Path) from the menu, this will allow you
to select a new pathname for any file that you move by copying to another
tideE directory file.

I also tried typing in the pathname into the path box with the same
crash/hang results.

In any rate the command-P route will not crash my machine.

Mike, thanks for the posting, appreciate it, hopefully things will remain
on topic... Hope to see something as far as SS 2.2 in a day or two, if I
can get one thats fairly solid and passes my initial testing, It will enter
a more rigorous beta test cycle..

I composed a 800+ page book on a 9 inch Mac+ screen.  Now I am working on a
two page screen and wonder how I did that 800+ book on that small screen.  I
guess if you have to, you do it!!!

System seven and its networking capability does not even recognize that the
FlashBox is connected to the systems.  It uses the built in drive.  That means
FlashBox is useless in the system seven.

I did the same thing as the Bob did (person with the message you replied to).
 I came to the same conclusion.  Hermes has a long to go to become a smooth
BBS.  I had a lot of trouble with it.  I set up SS once and everything worked
great, with some minor adjustments (which were my fault).

If Hermes reaches a state of smoothness it can be a great BBS.

When I was running Tabby and Second Sight under Multifinder (System 6.05)
it crashed a lot with "out of memory" errors. I have 2.5 megs on my Plus.
I went back to straight Finder and haven't had "many" problems. I would
think that in 7 it might be the same - unless the memory is increased.

Really?  I'm surprised at him.  He admitted once that tidE sometimes scrambles
what's on the screen when you save a file section (this does not effect the
way it is saved on disk so it isn't a real problem).  Perhaps he hasn't been
able to duplicate the problem?

Anyone else having unusual problems with tidE under System 7.0, please step
forward.  (Just so Scott and I know we're not going crazy!)

My BBS machine has 4MB of RAM.  You could always TRY 2.5MB, but I'd listen to

Well, I will list the echos I feed to MacHaven:

GENERAL_COMP        General Mac      ; this area is very interesting
MAC_HELP        Macintosh HELP Line  ; very helpful
MACUSER_PR        Press Releases from MacUser  ; New area

The GENERAL_COMP and MAC_HELP is fead to about 8 bbs's around the world,
on the backbone and soon, we are going to get a link to Italy or Hollen
and feed all these there.

MACUSER_PR is a new area where we are going to enter the sneak previews
from MacUser each month.

What do you think? Will you carry them?

I haven't had any luck getting the games to work with 7.0, so you're not
alone.  Not that that helps! 8-)

You shouldn't need a heap adjuster with System 7 since it adjusts
dynamically as required rather than being static like the previous system
versions.

I do not know what you exactly mean by "refresh modem string?"  I have "ATS0=1"
in both "hang up" and "Init" modem on the last line.  That puts the modem on
the "AA (Auto Answer)" mode.  Is that what you mean by that fraze?

I am just expressing a personal opinion.  It was a reply to another message
(which I even do not remember the exact original them, but remember that I
answered
it).  This sentence was one small portion of the whole message at the end.

So if the original message was off topic the moderator had to stop it.  At time
I did not see it as off topic since it sounded related.

I have tried looking up the author's on GENIE and Kuo and Shaw on no
longer online, as for Erik Selberg, well I can't seem to connect with his
fido node, connects at 1200 and then fails. Guess I'll have to contact his

How much traffic do these echos generate?. I have been wondering why more
and more echos of generic nature keep getting created, it is overkill.
Mac_Help is hardly needed with several other Mac related echos outside of
EchoMac to answer users questions. MacUser_PR, do you have permission to
re-distribute their information?, General_Comp sounds like a lightly used
EchoMac... I don't think so off the top, There are more than enough mac
echos now, to many as I see it which muddles the distribution of the ones
that would best serve the most users.

Depending on the age of the game, what it was compiled with, it might only
require a re-compile to fix it, however since I do not run any external
games, I am only guessing as to what the problems might be.

Dungeons and Empire are broken under 7.0.  I have to contact the author one
of these days and inquire about an update!!  You also DO NOT need a heap
adjuster
with 7.0 since the System software take care of the dynamically for you.

You know John, I couldn't agree more. I bought that useless piece of ----
and got a total lack of support. But, I am thankful, as it brought me to

I have watched this encroachment on our echo and have been silent until
now. Yes, let's have a H----- purge. It might be something when Price grows
up, but then we should never know on this echo. Scott is o.k. by me. (and

To all who responsed to my post on the heap adjustment in System 7 and
also the dead externals (games) with System 7., ... Thanks for your input.

I thought it would keep message traffic down by responding once instead of
to each person who responsed to my post.

As for Heap problems in System 7, I've noticed that you have to watch the
memory allocations for each program as sometimes the finder takes a while
to close a program that has ended, in part to waitnextevent background
wait times from the foreground program.  Otherwise even with 4 meg's of
memory you will get out of memory 108 errors.

As for the games/externals, oh well, I'm trying to keep this system mainly
a message only system, but am trying to keep games also.  Will definitley
have to contact the author's for system 7 compatible updates.

I think it's a matter of what you started with.  If I started with the 9-inch
screen, it probably wouldn't bother me as much.

Now what gets me is that I've got to turn the SS screen off just to drag files
to the trash.  When I first put SS on that machine, I didn't realize the SS
screen would take up the entire monitor!

The About this Macintosh dialog reports the same information as did the
About The Finder under 6.0.x. The difference is that you only see the
system heap of which the Finder is displayed as part of under 7.0. The heap
is dynamic and does not require the twiddling of 6.0.x and does not rely on
the boot blocks any longer for heap sizes.

Yes, ma'am! I already am experiencing mem shortages with one util that I
like to use -The Message Manager from Imaginetic Neovision -The Tuttle

7.0 on the BB machine.

They are being created because ECHOMAC has become such a *sewer*.  It is the
lowest common denominator, although admittedly I can't see any way to keep the
garbage posts out.  It is also the _last_ area I read because of the garbage
to gems ratio.

Erik is the one to ask, and if I remember right (since I'm a registered user
of Dungeons, and ran most of the games that were available, half the time they
would crash anyways.

Greg Shaw completed a System 7 compatible version of Battlefield last night
and it is available for Freq from Fort Mac (104/617). It is running fine on
a ][fx with Sys 7. Erik Selberg is close to having Dungeons ready, with
Wrestling and Empire to follow. I have been unable to get hold of Benjamin
Kuo yet but will keep you posted.

If you have version 1.4 of RRH, you an upgrade for $33 if I recall
correctly by sending the 1.4 master disk to Freesoft along with the upgrade
fee. If you are using RRH 2.0 and never updated to 2.1 you can download 2.1
from the Freesoft RT or call Freesoft and request the update on disk.

Ok, I said when I felt that I had something worth of reporting about the SS
update I would post it. Here's the latest.

There have been several additions to ConfigEdit, they are:
1. Checkbox to lock the serial port at the selected baud rate.
(Note: Since Tabby only supports 19200, thats the max for now)

2. Support for Hordware handshaking. This will require a custom cable.

3. The HomeFolder is moved from the Sysop Menu to the Config file.

4. The LaunchSS or LaunchRRH name is specified in the Config file now.

5. Option Key sends control characters Checkbox is now in the Config File.

6. New file transfer options, you can specify in the checkbox whether
to ask for file version or file description after the upload.

7> The ability to edit the following local Terminal Options.
a. Ignore Screen Clears (ASCII 12)
b. Scroll Lines up before full screen clears
c. Set Size of screen buffer (this will support copy & paste)

A new String Resource has been added with several editable strings for the
following functions: (Requires ResEdit)

1. Strings 1-4 specify modem port designations for support external serial
port cards.

2. String 5 specifies a string to send to the modem when quiting or local
login.

3. String 6 specifies the "where you calling from?" question, if you leave
this blank, users are not prompted for the question.

4. Strings 7-15 are the various chat related strings that are displayed.

With new HST's they can report CONNECT 14400, this string is now recognized
by SS.

As indicated in the Config file section, HSK is supported using the GPi
pin. This requires a custom cable.

Protocol list now has a Q>uit option.

New Survey commands

Command 48/49

Test current caller's restriction flag number (1 to 24) specified in TEXT.
if the value in LENGTH = 0 test Temporary flags otherwise test the
Permanent flags IF the flag is set (cmd 48) OR clear (cmd 49) branch to
command NAME specified in BRANCH.

Command 50/51/52

Test current caller's clearance level against that specified in TEXT.
if the value in LENGTH = 0 test Temporary clearance level otherwise
test Permanent

Command 53

Delete the file specified in TEXT.

Added the ability for new users to run thru a survey on login. After the
NewUser.Msg displayed, if a Survey file named NewUser.Svy is found in the
same folder as SS, it will be executed before the main menu.

A new menu command 65 will allow you to logoff without dropping carrier and
login as another user.

Features that are expected to be added, (they are not currently implemented
in the beta version under test)

1. Use of Notification Manager to indicate that you have been called for
chat. The Apple Icon will rotate after the chat command is selected until
the user logs off or you respond.

2. ConFigEdit maybe merged directly into SS as a Menu Item.

There maybe a few other features that are not listed here that might be
added that I will mention once I am sure they will added.

A variety of small glitches are being fixed as well.

use it (you need one on each machine).

I thought that Flash Box was strictly a hardware implementation that didn't
depend on which OS was using it, and that the OS didn't know about flash box.
 BTW, what does which drive is being use have to do with it?  I'm confused.

What time of day are you trying to call Erik?

If I remember, his BBS was only up after (I think) 10:00 p.m. at night, and
then down again in the early a.m.

Char, I believe the cost to upgrade was $35.00, not exactly positive, but that's
what I paid on the last upgrade.

If you wanted something to do book writing on (Macintosh), you should pick
yourself
up a used Lisa (XL), the 12" screen is great for WProcessing, and you can pick
one up real cheap ($200.00) possibly if you look around.

I have one, has 2mb memory, new ROMMS, 20MB HD, and I'm running System 6.0.3
on the new MacWorks software by Sunn Remarketing.

The screen size is great for WP, and it's still a Mac.  I have mine networked
with my Plus...

Here at AMUG we are tooling up for the next release of "BBS in a BOX".

Features to be included are:
1).  Conversion of all 850 pit files to DD.
2).  Addition of a multi font section with Adobe screen fonts, TT, Type 1.
3).  Establish a large GIF section.
4).  Over 200 megs of new files, old versions purged.
5).  Systems software easliy removed from BBS availablity.
6).  All Tech Note updates with Hyperstacks.
7).  Expanded press release section.
8).  A directory database section (Works, FileMaker, Panarama)
9).  A HyperCard search engine with file copy capability.
10). Mansion compatability/conversion tool.

Our plans are to notify current owners in mid July of the update at
$50 plus shipping and handling. User Groups and Sysops wishing
to make the product available to their users who are current owners
will receive a coupon that allows them to purchase 2-4 units at
$45 or 5-10 units at $39.95 plus shipping. These orders must be
placed before August 10, 1991 so that we will know how many extra
disks to press to mee this need.

In this way, User Groups and Sysops can use the CD as a fund raiser and be able
to offer it directly to users who would like a large collection of the BBS
library.
Here at AMUG many of our users really like the ability to get a copy of the
BBS library. I believe your users will like the idea as well.

We will press the disk in mid August'91 and should have October'91 "BBS in a
BOX" Volume II available and shipping the first week of September'91.

If you like this plan or dislike it please let us know. We are trying to get
the price per CD as low as we can and support the User Group/Sysop community.

Michael Connick has said he will not support hardware handshaking. Will this
will be a fun trick reinitializing for SS and Tabby quite differently.

Cool... Will SS support using the same User Log for all nodes? And the other

At the very end there is the string, "AT&W" to save the modem strings and then

a CR.  The thing is that I did not have this problem with system 6.05.  My set

up was the same as now.  The different is that now I am running system seven!!!

I said that and John object to it.  I briefly explained in another message
that, it was a reply to a message in this area.  Further explanation is that
I
read most of my mail with Copernicus in the "GLOBAL" mode.  Most of the time
I
do not even look which echo area the message is when I answer a post.

It is really up to the moderator to stop Hermes postes in the area.  This is
not up to either the people who reply to these post not to other users to do
the job of the moderator.  That will create confusion and sometimes
resentment.

There is one thing that we all agree on:  Posting about other BBS softwares
has to be stoped in this echo.
